The Cambridge Faculty of Music, one of the oldest and most famous university music departments in the world, remains at the forefront of research and education. One of the most outstanding features of Cambridge is the richness and diversity of its practical music making, the fame of which extends far beyond the city’s boundaries.
The Faculty also has an extensive collection of historical and other instruments, which can be loaned to students who have appropriate skills.
Institute of Astronomy
The Institute of Astronomy (IoA) came into being in 1972 by the amalgamation of three institutions which had developed on the site. These were the Cambridge University Observatory which was established in 1823, the Solar Physics Observatory (1912) and the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy (1967).
