Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
DAMTP aims to carry out research of world-class excellence in each of a number of groups whose interests span broad and important areas of applied mathematics and theoretical physics. In so doing it collaborates with strong groups nationally and internationally, and participates in numerous interdisciplinary projects and programmes. It recognises the crucial importance of research students in research programmes, and the importance to research students of training through working on demanding research problems under the direction of leading mathematical scientists in the stimulating atmosphere afforded by strong and dynamic groups.
The research activities in DAMTP have traditionally covered three broad areas: fluid and solid mechanics; astrophysics, relativity and cosmology; and high energy quantum physics. In recent years, however, it has been increasingly difficult to draw a distinction between high energy physics and cosmology, since the subjects of Quantum Gravity and of String (or M-) theory span them both.
